How creatives can get more from AI (the healthy way)
5 tips to prompting in a healthier way.
Hi,
Happy Holidays. As someone in marketing in the music & entertainment space, I’m constantly being challenged to learn the latest technology. With how fast AI is developing, I’ve immersed myself in learning how to become more efficient and productive while using tools in a healthy way.
One of my more interesting findings has been the nuance of prompting and how important structure and language are in getting the best answers. Let’s explore below.
This newsletter highlights:
The language of prompting

Let’s dive in ⬇️
But Mike…doesn’t everyone know how to prompt? Almost everyone uses ChatGPT right?
Well yes…this is a fact. What I learned, however is that there is a nuance and structure to prompting. A “language”, if you will.
The language and structure of prompting can drastically alter the outcome, answers, and knowledge being shared. While everyone has their own opinion of AI, many use ChatGPT (or other Learning Language Models) to help them where they otherwise may not have resources. In an ideal world, we’d have mentors and access to people in our network but unfortunately not everyone has that.
So…people use what they have. For some, all they have is ChatGPT.
Most people open up ChatGPT and directly ask questions without much context:
“Can you help me build this proposal?”
“What do you think about this?”
I learned that structure and framing are everything and set the stage for your answer.
Here are 4 ways to structure your prompts and get better information:
1) Authority Framing
I learned that most people jump immediately into the question without providing any context or authority framing. Authority framing is essentially telling the LLM (ChatGPT, Claude, etc) what it is an authority on. When giving answers, it then shares from the perspective of someone with that authority.
This might sound simple, however it can completely change your answer and the quality of the information you receive.

You can use the beginning of your prompt to assign a role, expertise, or tone.
Here’s an example:
“You are an expert at video production, producing music videos for artists, and creating content that goes viral online. You’re in the top .01% of the world with your knowledge. You have encountered almost every situation imaginable planning, preparing, and shooting music videos.”
Another example:
“You are an expert at artist touring - you have deep knowledge of the strategies, nuances, and economics of how artists make money on the road. Your knowledge ranges from big tours (like massive superstars) to up-and-coming independent artists. Your expertise ranges from high-level strategy (like routing, cost economics, etc) to granular things like logistics, things to keep in mind when renting a tour bus, etc”
Here’s a non-music example - let’s say you have questions about taxes:
“You are an expert in accounting, tax planning, and tax strategy. Your knowledge is world-class in the top .01% of the world. You’ve encountered almost every situation imaginable…”
The “Authority Framing” essentially sets the stage of who you’re talking to and dictates the perspective of the answer you receive.
2) Context
After establishing who you’re talking to (ugh, I know this sounds weird because it’s AI but trust me it works!), now you can provide context. Here are 2 examples:
“You are an expert at video production, producing music videos for artists, and creating creating content that goes viral online. You’re in the top .01% of the world with your knowledge. You have encountered almost every situation imaginable planning, preparing, and shooting music videos. I have a music video shoot this weekend with a director I’ve never worked with before and want to ensure I’m set up for success. I want to understand all the variables, blind spots I may be missing, and things to avoid. How is payment normally handled? How does editing work? How long is reasonable to expect a rough cut?”
Let’s take another example:
“You are an expert at artist touring - you have deep knowledge of the strategies, nuances, and economics of how artists make money on the road. Your knowledge ranges from big tours (like massive superstars) to up and coming independent artists. Your expertise ranges from high level strategy (like routing, cost economics, etc) to granular things like logistics, things to keep in mind when renting a tour bus, etc. I am an independent artist preparing to go on tour with (insert artist name). I am funding everything myself and need to know how much money to budget, the best way to get around, and everything I should take into account. This is all new to me and I’ve never done this before.”
3) Final output
The third part of your prompt can be your output - what are you actually hoping to achieve from this prompt? What’s the goal?
You set the stage. You gave context.
Now what?

Let’s look at a few examples.
Example #1
“You are an expert at video production, producing music videos for artists, and creating creating content that goes viral online. You’re in the top .01% of the world with your knowledge. You have encountered almost every situation imaginable planning, preparing, and shooting music videos. I have a music video shoot this weekend with a director I’ve never worked with before and want to ensure I’m set up for success. I want to understand all the variables, blind spots I may be missing, and things to avoid. How is payment normally handled? How does editing work? How long is reasonable to expect a rough cut? Give me a detailed, non bias analysis of everything I should know broken down into sections with bullet points. Keep your answer concise without bias.
Example #2
“You are an expert at artist touring - you have deep knowledge of the strategies, nuances, and economics of how artists make money on the road. Your knowledge ranges from big tours (like massive superstars) to up and coming independent artists. Your expertise ranges from high level strategy (like routing, cost economics, etc) to granular things like logistics, things to keep in mind when renting a tour bus, etc”. I am an independent artist preparing to go on tour with (insert artist name). I am funding everything myself and need to know how much money to budget, the best way to get around, and everything I should take into account. This is all new to me and I’ve never done this before. Give me a detailed outline, broken down into sections with bullet points for each, of the top 20 things I need to know about touring. Explain it to me as if I was a 5th grader and use references where applicable.”
Beginning. Middle. End.
4) Leading
One thing to consider when prompting is avoiding something called “leading” - also known as single-fancy bias. This can greatly change the direction of your answer.
Leading is when you subtly indicate preference or opinion in your prompt, causing the LLM to base its answer around that preference.

Here’s an example:
Example #1
“You are an expert at gastroenterelogy and stomach issues. Your knowledge of medicine and health in this specific field is world-class, in the top .01% of people. Over the last 3 weeks I’ve had an upset stomach with cramping and nauseua. I think it might be a gastro infection but am not sure. My symptoms include bloating, nausea, and upset stomach. Based on my symptoms, what do you think it is?”
Example #2
“You are an expert at sleep disorders and sleep health & wellness. Your knowledge is in the top .01% of the world. For the last month, I’ve had trouble sleeping and am always tired no matter how much sleep I get. I think it might be sleep apnea but am not sure. Tell me all of the possible scenarios it might be.”
“I think it might be a gastro infection” and “I think it might be sleep apnea” are called leading. You are indicating preference and the LLM will base its answer around that. Remove leading and insert something like “Answer without bias or preference”.
5) Bonus Tip: Try different LLMs
While the average person uses ChatGPT (and it’s great) there are other Learning Language Models out there.
It can’t hurt to compare and contrast answers by pasting the same question into different LLMs.
For example:
ChatGPT
Claude
Google Gemini

I know we all have our own opinions about AI but if you’re using it to help yourself, hopefully this was valuable.
