The internet just changed forever

OpenAI's new features might change how we use the internet.

Two weeks ago, OpenAI introduced their new AgentKit feature, allowing developers and users to build AI agents directly within their platform. It was a massive announcement that served as the next step in OpenAI becoming a global AI marketplace.

Around the same time, OpenAI also launched their integration with Spotify, which I believe could potentially change the future of music discovery.

Let’s explore below.

Okay so…boom. Some might say that I’m overhyping this (and maybe I am) however I genuinely think OpenAI’s recent developments have the potential to change how we use the digital world.

Let’s start wtih AgentKit.

1) AgentKit

One of the first major updates OpenAI introduced recently is AgentKit.

It’s essentially an internal toolkit that allows users to build and deploy AI agents directly within OpenAI.

Building AI agents is nothing new - many platforms have existed previously, for example n8n and String. The difference is that OpenAI, one of the biggest companies in the game, now has their own version of this.

While n8n requires manually engineering workflows, OpenAI can build new capabilities by itself and also remember and recall past actions from memory.

With platforms like n8n, you’re building each piece manually. With OpenAI’s AgentKit, you tell it what you want to build and it basically builds it for you while integrating with tons of apps and other platforms.

I promise we’ll get past all of this nerdy AI stuff in just a few paragraphs but hear me out…

I decided to give it a test and tried creating my own AI agent.

My goal: create an agent that gives you ideas for IG captions for artist social posts based on the criteria you prompt it with.

You tell it what kind of artist + song you’re looking for captions for and it generates a range of options for you.

Here’s an example of how it looks:

The web on the left is the actual agent workflow, ie the skeleton.

All I did was tell OpenAI what I wanted to build and it built it for me.

The screen on the right is a preview window of how the agent works - you’ll see I entered Dijon’s song “Yamaha” and it generated captions based on the criteria I entered.

My test agent was music-specific (really social media specific) but imagine how easy it would be to create something that’s more general + practical for the average person.

For example, a PDF reader that scans documents, compares them, and automatically tells you the 5 most important things from each document along with the 5 biggest differences from each one.

You can essentially create almost anything in AgentKit.

2) Spotify integration

In addition to launching AgentKit, OpenAI also announced their integration with different apps and the abillity to use those apps within ChatGPT.

OpenAI is essentially becoming a marketplace that connects external apps / websites with the ability to use those websites within their platform.

Early integrations include Spotify, Canva, and Zillow with Spotify being the most interesting one to me for obvious reasons.

Users now have the ability to connect their Spotify profile to OpenAI and essentially use elements of Spotify within ChatGPT simply by prompting it.

After connecting your Spotify account in Settings, you can call on Spotify simply by typing @spotify into your ChatGPT window - this will automatically trigger your prompt within Spotify.

Based on my research, you can now use ChatGPT to:

  • Create playlists

  • Recommend artists

  • Recommend albums

  • Recommend playlists

  • Recommend individual songs

All based on your Spotify profile connectivity.

Here’s an example - I prompted ChatGPT and said:

“Create a playlist called GPT and curate a list of 10 songs from up and coming New York hip-hop artists”.

Within seconds, ChatGPT curated a playlist for me and gave me the ability to add that playlist to my Spotify profile ( by clicking the + button).

Before finalizing the playlist, ChatGPT asked me a few additional questions to help with its recommendations:

To me, this kind of integration has the potential to change human behavior on Spotify and how music is discovered.

We’re watching in real time how the music discovery process is evolving:

While still important, editorial playlisting and curation have decreased in relevancy in favor of algorithmic recommendations like Discover Weekly and Release Radar.

With Discovery Weekly and Release Radar, Spotify recommends music to you based on your listening habits and behavior within their app.

With ChatGPT’s new integration, it completely changes the dynamic of music recommendations and begs lots of questions…

Will people start going to ChatGPT for recommendations instead of manually looking on Spotify or listening to playlists?

If so, it leads to the next question of how ChatGPT’s recommendations work - will it be strictly based on the prompt from the user or will it take into account context from previous prompts and conversations?

For example, if over the course of 6 months, as I’m prompting GPT I let it know that I love specific types of hip-hop artists, when it comes time for me to ask it to create a playlist or recommend artists, will it take our previous conversations into account?

Aside from those existing conversations, how will it determine what music falls into the guidelines of the prompt its given? Why did it suggest Ransom & Rome Streetz in the playlist I asked for? What about those artists fell into the critieria I gave that ultimately made GPT select it?

It feels like we might be entering a world where music discovery becomes correlated to user prompting and in a way, is finally the digital representation of word of mouth.

For example, if I asked a friend for music recommendations, I could be very specific in a way that I likely couldn’t elsewhere on the internet. While I could use Spotify to find music, I’m sort of at the mercy of their algorithmic playlists and recommendations.

With ChatGPT’s new integration, I can take that specific nature in looking for recommendations online to try and craft as carefully curated a recommendation as possible through my prompting.

When editorial playlisting was the big thing, artists and record labels vied for spots on those playlists.

When Spotify introduced algorithmic playlists, taking advantage of the Spotify pitch tool in Spotify for Artists became a thing to be able to hit Release Radar.

Now that ChatGPT has the potential and power to recommend music, how does that change strategy for artists and their teams as well as user behavior in finding new artists?

It’s only a matter of time until users are going directly to ChatGPT for their curation and OpenAI has the potential to blow up an artist by delivering them in their recommendations.

We legitimately might be witnessing the start of how human behavior in the digital world changes, simply because discovery can now be associated with more specific context and nuance.

This type of technology could lead to an even bigger transformative shift in OpenAI powered startups. What happens when OpenAI opens the floodgates and allows the average person to build an app and integrate it with OpenAI / ChatGPT?

For example’s sake, let’s say someone named John builds an app called Tables and integrates it with Open AI. Similiar to how I can type @spotify and it triggers Spotify in ChatGPT, users can type @tablesapp and it will trigger the app. If John can get enough word of mouth on the app, how many thousands or millions of people could it potentially get in front of on ChatGPT? Massive global reach at scale could happen just through connectivity.

The same transformation applies with AgentKit and the other integrations.

Right now, human behavior on the internet is very much manual - people manually go to websites, browse, shop, look for things, etc.

With how fast AI is developing, pretty soon the digital world may operate in a way where every person has their own agentic dashboard (for example, OpenAI) where they enter in what they’re looking for, what they want to buy, etc and the AI does everything for them automatically in a personalized way, as opposed to them manually browsing different websites.

ChatGPT’s new integration with Booking.com means you can book vacations and travel directly from a prompt without having to manually scan the booking website.

Same thing with Zillow - users can now find real estate listings by prompting on ChatGPT as opposed to having to scan homes manually on Zillow.

What happens when OpenAI (and other AI platforms) can connect to almost every single app that you use? For example, when it can connect to Google Calendar, Google Docs, etc and you can keep track of your schedule directly with OpenAI.

There is a world where humans no longer manually look for things on the internet -they have their own dashboards that recommend their own personalized news based on their prompting, book trips for them, keep tabs on their calendar, shop for them, and automate their lives.

It’s almost like people will have their own personalized version of the internet, automatically given to them without having to manually look for things anymore.

An agentic internet - one where agents handle tasks instead of humans manually doing everything.

Wherever we end up going, one thing is for sure - we’re in for a wild ride.
